Traum

Maria Fischer’s ‘Traumgedanken’

Unbelievably cool:

The book “Traumgedanken” (“Thoughts on dreams”) contains a collection of literary, philosophical, psychological and scientifical texts which provide an insight into different dream theories.

To ease the access to the elusive topic, the book is designed as a model of a dream about dreaming. Analogue to a dream, where pieces of reality are assembled to build a story, it brings different text excerpts together. They are connected by threads which tie in with certain key words. The threads visualise the confusion and fragileness of dreams.

On five pages there are illustrations made out of thread. Their shape and colour relies on the key words on the opposite page. This way an abstract image of the dream about dreaming is generated.

In addition there are five pages where a significant excerpt from a text of the opposite page is stitched into the paper. It is not legible because the type’s actual surface is inside the folded page. This expresses the mysteriousness of dreams and the aspect of dream interpretation.

Contact

‘Your Beautiful Eyes’ by Suren Manvelyan

I had to train myself to make eye contact with people, to the point where today I question whether my effort to force myself into a stranger’s eyespace is a bad habit. I have even taken to wearing glasses I don’t need in order to put a layer of useless plastic between me and another person’s soul-window. Get close enough to any part of anyone and their humanity breaks down.

Inception

Unofficial Inception Poster by Ibraheem Youssef

Inception poster

World Famous Design Junkies » Intercepted!.

Bootleg film posters are an increasingly popular means for aspiring designers to ride the coattails of already famous phenomena to greater recognition. A little like inserting Britney Spears Nude Pix OMG MUST SEE into a blog post.
Normally such naked, but not actually naked self-promotion wouldn’t get a link from me, but Youssef and other poster-hackers are a reminder that real life film posters just aren’t interesting enough, that even a film as innovative as Inception is promoted by a picture of the cast and a tagline that doesn’t do it justice (‘your mind is the scene of the crime’). It reminds us that our billboards and bus stops could be covered in art instead of advertisements.

Proletariat

Back in the pre-Facebook long-long-ago the Proletariat were definitely Alt and had a chill memes established by authentic ‘vintage’ posters like the ones above that ‘went viral’ across Japan/Livejournal. They ‘rebelled’ against ‘the system’ so that their jobs/careers would be better aligned with their personal brands.

Would being proletarian extend my personal brand 2 my bros in the Worker’s struggle?

Are Am-Appy employees proletarian?

What proletarian products are authentic/entry-level?

(Note: I have no idea why I am blogging a link to some nice posters from the 30s in the voice of Carles.)

Lost

It appears that Chicago’s James Kay, aka Transmission Atelier has been using high end print techniques to produce work that appeals to me and me alone:

Transmission Atelier is a fine art publisher and printmaker producing superior quality art and photo editions of the most provocative imagery throughout history. In the spirit of the art printers of 19th century Europe, leveraging the most advanced – modern digital imaging methods.
Transmission Atelier was founded by James Kay a native Chicagoan, James began as a commercially trained photo-engraver and Photo-lithographer at the age of 15. With over 25 years in the Graphics Industry, James has
transitioned his expertise from the production of commercially printed graphic art to fine art photography, art publishing, and digital pigment based print making.
Transmission Atelier features high end facsimile edition prints of antique anatomical and allegorical illustration from the 15th through 19th centuries, rare silent film posters from the early 20th century. Each size is printed on archival paper with archival pigment based inks. Each edition is limited, numbered and embossed with the Transmission Atelier Studio Stamp. Each edition print is made from the original source material. The engraving and printing techniques used by the artists on the original works is of astonishing craftsmanship and is all but a completely lost art form.

Aquatic

Underwater Gardening: The World’s Best Aquariums of 2009.

Aquariums. Yeah, that’s what I’m posting about today. Those big glass wastes-of-space from Dentist’s waiting rooms. These are some of the finalists for the International Aquatic Plant Layout Contest, in which thousands of Aquascapists from 51 different countries compete to give their creations the most Metal name. This year the judges had to pick from ‘Time of Eternity’, ‘Awakening’ and ‘Whispers of Stones’. The winner will receive a sleeveless denim jacket signed by the surviving members of Manowar and original Frank Franzetta artwork depicting a busty maiden with a sword held aloft, symbolising courage.

Rose

Kris Lewis - Rose

‘Rose’ by Kris Lewis. (Gallery nsfw)

Kris Lewis’s paintings look like the things they look like. Art has fallen a long way when that seems new and innovative.
