Highschool of the Dead Exegesis #1-2

Only a small part of Daisuke Sato’s violent, fan-service lathered manga Highschool of the Dead actually takes place in a highschool. Unlike the shopping mall in Romero’s Dawn of the Dead the school in HOTD isn’t somewhere to shelter and ride out the zombie apocalypse- like every other structure, whether we’re talking about a physical building or the symbol-systems that gird our culture, when the rules change it becomes a liability. The real education, the real highschool, is the zombie-infested world beyond the school gates. If you can keep your mind from being numbed by ceaseless close-ups of the bulging vulvas of sixteen-year-old Japanese schoolgirls barely contained by minuscule cotton panties then you just might learn something from Highschool of the Dead.
